Real fossils vs. fabricated fossils

Real fossils vs. fabricated fossils

In today's day and age, it is easy to fabricate certain things. Photoshop and mass produced moulds are just a few techniques used to scam people into buying a fake product. Here at stonesandbones we take every step necessary to provide you with real, authentic, and genuine products. Here are a few strategies we use to identify a plastic moulded fossil from a million year old specimen:

Perfection vs. Damaged: Fossils are often found in rock that can be hard and heavy, and extracting delicate material with hand tools such as pick axes and hammers can often damage the fossil. A sign that a fossil is genuine are cracks and imperfections. A completely perfect fossil that is delicate in nature would be a rarity.

Price: If something is too good to be true, it probably is. If an unbelievably good deal is spotted while shopping around this could be a sign that the fossil is mass produced. At stonesandbones, we offer competitive pricing. We believe everyone should have access to earths wonders regardless of budget, while still ensuring our partners can maintain a healthy living wage.

Information: Fossil collectors and rock hounders are often enthusiastic and treasure the hunt just as much as the findings. An authentic dealer will be able to recall the location and circumstances of the find, and may even offer photo or video evidence of the extraction. Be sure to check back often on our tik tok (stonesandbones.ca) to join us on our adventures! New videos will be uploaded weekly.
