The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia) dates back to the age of the dinosaurs. Previously called a “Fossil Tree” as they were thought to be extinct until their rediscovery in China in 1944. It is a popular ornamental tree that can grow up to 120 feet tall.

The Tranquille Shale was formed by an ancient lake where the fossils were preserved in a fine layer of silt that built up over the years as diatoms in the lake bloomed and died.

These fossils where found in early Eocene (56 million to 47.8 million years ago) deposits of northern Washington state, United States.
